A bit late, but wanted to highlight the 1st Annual memorial award given in honor of PFC David E. Dietrich, who sacrificed his life on 29 December 2006. 18 years later, on 29 December 2024, we were honored to present a check to Scout Troop 56 in David's honor.
Many years ago, as a young boy, David walked into Troop 56, and said he wanted to be a boy scout. Mr. Raisner, the troop leader, met and learned about David and ultimately began the path for Jean to foster him and Tara to be his foster sister during his teen years. When I asked Jean and Tara, who they thought should receive the first memorial award, they immediately said Scout Troop 56.
It was on honor to present this check to the Troop and we also tasked them with a mission to build a stetson, spur, and saber holder in honor of David. I left them with the saber I brought to Iraq to award combat spurs to Soldiers. Finn, their representative accepted the mission and will build the wood holder and when finished, we will award David his well deserved combat spurs and stetson as a Cavalry Scout and he will continue to have his legacy and story told for years to come.
Thank you to everyone who came out, which included his best friends from high school, his biological sister, and friends of the community. It was an amazing experience.
2025, we will continue to honor more awards in honor of our Soldiers and continue to tell their stories so they are never forgotten!
